Tough as old boots? Ski boots may be your most robust item of footwear, but they do need some care to help them last as long as possible. If you’ve made the investment of buying your own pair of boots then do look after them properly to help give them a long life.
Here are 3 things you should know about how to store ski boots
1. Make sure they are completely dry
Are you guilty of this? You got home from your ski holiday and went straight back to work next day, stashing your ski boots in a bag and not thinking about them again…
Please get them out and make sure they are properly dry before storing them!
If they were even slightly damp, any bacteria will have a field day and you’ll open that bag next winter and be horrified!
How to dry your ski boots:
1) Pull out the liners: open all the buckles, put one hand on the back of the shell and with the other, grab the handle of the liner, and pull the liner over the toes until the heel slides up and out. 2) Take out your custom footbed. 3) Leave everything in a dry place at normal air temperature for a few days (not on the radiator, it will be too hot). 4) Put everything back together (make sure you get the left and right footbeds in the correct liners!) 5) Fasten the buckles as tight as you would for skiiing, and put them in a cardboard box or breathable or slightly open bag.
2. Get the temperature right
This is probably the most important aspect of how to store your ski boots during the summer. Custom footbeds are moulded using heat so if they are kept in a place that gets hot in summertime, such as an attic or garage, they will lose their shape and you will lose that essential support next time you want to ski. Likewise, the outer shell is made of plastic, so if the boots are too warm for an extended period of time, then any shell modifications would retract back the original form.

In a utility room
Under the stairs
3. Avoid unpleasant surprises next winter!
Storing ski boots in a damp or humid environment is a no-go. Why? Because mould spores can go wild in a warm and moist environment, and you will open your ski boots ready for your next holiday to a very nasty surprise!
Don’t let any pests get at your boots: moths and mice cause irreparable damage to ski boots, if they find them. The liners can make a lovely home for a family of mice over a summer, but you don’t want to open that box next winter and find your ski boots shredded.
These are our top tips on how to store your ski boots correctly, we hope you find them useful!
